H20 Xtream through the years

19 Oct 1995       Mayor Rex Kirton performed a ceremonial turning of the sod to officially mark the beginning of construction for the Upper Hutt Leisure Centre.
12 Dec 1996   The Upper Hutt Leisure Centre was officially opened by Governor-General Sir Michael Hardie Boys. Costing $6.1 million, it was the largest new central city project in two decades. The facility featured a variety of attractions, including the Pak’nSave fun pool with a wave machine, a Cobb & Co. water slide, a rapid river, water cannons, water dumpers, a spaghetti tree, a rain drop unit, the Paddle Pop toddlers pool, a lane pool, the Holden spa pool, a sauna, Waves Café, and the Tadpoles childminding service.
15 Sep 1999   The Leisure Centre was rebranded as "H2O Xtream" following six months of research aimed at engaging the teen market. A group of nine local college students aged 13 and 14, known as the "Xtream Teen Team Board," provided input to the pool management on what teens would enjoy from the facility.
8 Dec 2005   H2O Xtream attempted a Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled on a water slide in 24 hours to celebrate the launch of its new slide, "Darkness Falls." Ten staff members attempted to beat the 753.96 km record. Unfortunately, the attempt was halted at 10pm when one team member, who had been injured during their third slide, had to seek medical attention after continuing for 13 more hours. The team covered 409 km and completed 5,761 slides. "Darkness Falls" opened to the public on 10 December.

6 Feb 2023   H2O Xtream closed for refurbishment.
